Dread of failure, so perennial

Erects smokescreen of doubts lingering

Which bedevils every step of our journey

For putting in sincere efforts

A negative feeling to deliver

‘If’ haunting at every step

Is the first sign of failure

This suspicious incapability spurs our

Negative attitude we’ve adopted

By non-application of mind

Including non-use of all the intelligence stratagems

That is there in the kitty

Of the person concerned.

Lack of confidence

Along with not putting in efforts with sincerity

Along with lack of commitment

To meet goals

Fixed with half-hearted mental a Makes very little impact

In forwarding movement in deliverance

Which cannot just be acquired

Without exploiting our inner potentials

Because one cannot expect seeds to germinate

On the dry earth

Without working on it

Plowing it

Watering it

Putting correct dose of manure

Thence only the yield would be plentiful

Success will not be possible

With wishful thinking only

Only sincere work is the key to success

When there is a strong will to excel

Then every barrier could be the breach with ease.

Literally speaking, the failure is the condition wherein a person, after trying his best under given situations, fails to make a mark or grade. The failure could be not only in examination, it could be failure in business, failure in securing a best deal for himself any pursuit of importance, failure to catch a flight/train/bus due to traffic jam and its consequence to the individual concerned, lack of success in meeting targets and goals due to one reason or other, structural failure due to weak foundation, heart or kidney failure due to body ailments etc.

Spectre of failure could haunt us anytime anywhere. It may be due to our own faults or maybe the situation in which we are placed. Generally speaking, we take failure as not making the grade in the examination due to our own weakness in not preparing ourselves seriously and sincerely.

In Bhagwad Gita, it has rightly been said that we should maintain equanimity or balance of mind both in failure or success. Our duty should be to perform our side of our duty and leave everything else; results will surely be appropriate when our efforts are honest.

Essentially, we have a right to perform the given duty but we are not entitled to the fruits of action. Our failure may be due to reasons beyond our control but we should never consider ourselves as the result of our failure. But our efforts should be to continue trying without inhibition. Bend on the road is not the end of the road, it may be a stop-gap and bestows further impetus to our efforts. Failure should not make any dent in our sincere efforts.

The fear of failure is a web in which we can engulf ourselves and could entrap perennially. We can get over this fear by following the ensuing perspectives:-

In life, we do not always have roses but along with roses, we should also expect thorns also. Thorns are synonymous with those failures which every one of us sometimes faces. I take thorns necessary for the protection of the roses that a rose plant possess. Failures are the ones which give us the experience to face facts squarely.

Failures should be taken as stepping stone for a big success.

Those who see failures as pitfalls will not be able to appreciate the experiences which failures give us.

If we fear failure then there will not be any risk-taking. If we get bogged down by failure then further movement in any field would be impossible.

We must understand the rules of the game; every failure has a silver lining for success if and when we keep trying.

Failures should be taken as a small distraction but not complete curtain on the success story when we keep trying.

History is replete with several examples wherein people after they failed came out successful after their sincere efforts and that too with flying colors.

Failure could bring about new experiences which could help us to excel despite the difficult situation.

Evidently, when we are aware that we have the negative traits like boredom, laziness and to top it all non-interest in doing anything. Mind you, all the three are self-created maladies and until unless we try to analyze ourselves completely and take corrective steps the result could be entirely very dismal.

I am surprised, how come, after knowing full well we are having these negative traits then we shall not be able to transact anything tangible. The following should be done to come out of this quagmire:-

We have to be aware of ourselves sincerely and try to remove all these three negative traits from your system.

To come out of our boredom, try to be active in some pursuit which interests us the most – like reading or writing. Or cultivate a positive habit which our environmental permits which allow us to.

When you have developed a sense of occupation in some pursuits of your liking, think about all the angles and minute details as to how to perform your pursuits which may bring about monetary gains along with knowledge base too. If this is done then we would be inclined to follow the right course at right time.

When we have developed a sort of inclination towards some pursuit, we would be mentally inclined and interested in following that course of action with more seriousness.

Finally, we should involve ourselves, we should not while away your time in unnecessary daydreaming since daydreaming will not fulfill our coveted dreams but be an impediment in furtherance of any cause we take in hand.

  • Procrastination when a thing could be done within a timeframe.
  • Taking failure in a negative light rather than a stepping stone for further sincere efforts.
  • When sincerity in our efforts is lacking.
  • Boredom writ large or pervading in our efforts.
  • Over-confidence too sometimes play spoil-sport in our efforts to success which put pays our complete efforts.
  • Pragmatic approach lacking when situations are appropriate.
  • Killing instinct in preparation stage missing.
  • Failing to create situations and conditions before putting in our sincere efforts.
  • Right and positive approach missing.
  • Losing foresight and bearings.
  • Not showing character to face facts squarely.
  • Getting pissed off at one’s own conduct when none exists.
  • Nonuse of synergy and inner potentials in relation to time and space.

GOD is very compassionate with us in every way, need is to use those blessings which are the results of His bounties and thank Him for everything that He gives us. We should also share these bounties with our fellow-beings. I am the person who loves God and His Creations. I love my Creator and not fear Him. My children are adjusted to life, incommensurate, to their Karma and destiny. I have served as a Sr CGO for about 38 years in a Central Govt. Presently I am serving as an Adm Offer with an Engineering College. I am a spiritual person with liberal ways of thinking. I respect all the religions as I respect mine since I understand that all the religions are the pathways to a SINGLE ENTITY - paths for connecting with Him may be different but the ULTIMATE SOURCE IS ONE. I want to be a student till last day of my life. I am a homeopath also, which I pursue as a social service only. Happy moments, I take as God's Gifts, sad ones I take as His Test for me. I believe that He will surely assist me in this Test of His, come what may. Really. I have more belief in Him than I am on my own. You can comprehend my philosophy in life from my write-ups which I write while interacting with them. I firmly believe that every person has the special characteristic which other fellows cannot have and I respect that person as such. That is why it is rightly said if intentions are good, everything goes well with you.

  1. It has been seen the success and failure in our efforts depends on our sincere efforts besides it resides in our mind. Withe control in our efforts, everything gets streamlined.

  2. Sound post, Harbans. A self-help book I have never read has the most positive title I’ve ever seen: ‘Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway’ by Susan Jeffers. I’ve no idea whether it lives up to its title but it has been read for more than a quarter of a century

    1. Derrick sir, my sincere thanks for your invaluable comments. I think, everybody talks about success without taking into account the thought of failure – which everybody thinks to be negative and nothing else. Nobody can succeeds without all the pros and cons which the situations provides us no matter how confident we are!

Susan Jeffers ‘FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY’ would be worth reading book – wish that I had read it before.
